Crowns & Bridges
There are many reasons why your teeth may become discoloured or damaged. You may have lost teeth, leading to gaps in your dentition as a result of trauma, gum disease and the use of certain medications or medical conditions, such as diabetes.
When this happens, it can have a serious impact on your confidence and may stop you from smiling and laughing. In extreme circumstances, it can be linked to embarrassment, anxiety and depression. We don’t want anyone to suffer like this.
Using crowns and bridges to repair and restore discoloured, damaged and missing teeth, we will help you smile with confidence again.
What is a crown?
A crown is a form of dental restoration that replaces the part of your tooth that is damaged or broken. For example, if you have a particularly large or deep filling or a piece of tooth has broken off, we will create a ‘crown’ to replace and restore the tooth in line with your other teeth.
Other uses for crowns include:
- To improve the appearance of discoloured fillings by replacing them with a crown.
- To protect/cap a restored tooth following root canal treatment so you can bite down and eat as normal.
- To anchor a bridge or dental implant to keep it firmly in place.
- To cover up a chipped or broken tooth.
How does a crown work?
To fit a crown, there are several steps we take:
- First we will prepare the damaged tooth, which means removing old fillings and shaping the original tooth to allow the crown to fit the tooth.
- We take an impression or digital scan of the tooth that needs repairing/restoring.
- From that impression, we create a crown in our dental laboratory that will precisely fit the damaged tooth, making sure it exactly matches the neighbouring teeth in terms of bite, contact, size and colour, to ensure it is as natural-looking as possible.
- Finally, we will bond the crown onto the original tooth.
As with all dental procedures, we will explain the entire process to you, discuss the different types of crowns available to you, answer any questions you may have and guide you all the way.
What is a bridge?
A bridge is a fixed type of restoration that is used to replace missing teeth. It often uses the adjacent teeth to adhere to and provide a stable restoration so you can confidently smile and chew with the bridge in place. There are various types of bridges and the most suitable options will be discussed with you during the treatment planning process.
The base of a bridge can either be constructed from precious metal or zirconia (porcelain) depending on the individual case, which makes it solid and hard-wearing. If the bridge is going to be visible in your smile line, we will use a zirconia base so the bridge is as natural-looking as possible in comparison with your other teeth.
Fitting a bridge will make sure that not only are the teeth being repaired/restored are strong and stable, but will also strengthen the surrounding teeth. In some cases, we will fix the bridge to your jaw with a dental implant, particularly if you have several adjacent teeth missing rather than only damaged, chipped or broken teeth.
How does a bridge work?
A bridge will be made in the same way we make a crown; by preparing the teeth prior to taking an impression or digital scan of the teeth to be repaired/restored, which our dental technicians will use to make the final bridge.
Once you’ve had a crown or bridge fitted, we will advise you on the best hygiene regime to use to ensure your crown or bridge will last a lifetime.
Surgical Extractions
Surgical Extractions
There are a number of reasons why you may need to have a tooth or teeth extracted but rest assured, we would never carry out a surgical extraction unless it’s in your best interests and essential.
When would I need to have a tooth removed?
- There are some circumstances where it is necessary to remove a tooth or several teeth, often leading us to eliminating any pain you will be feeling and helping us to save your remaining teeth. Situations when a surgical extraction may be be required include:
- Extensive tooth decay from disease or other reasons.
- Overcrowded teeth in the mouth, i.e. there are too many teeth in your jawline and not enough space for them, which may cause secondary problems.
- Infected teeth that aren’t responding to root canal treatment.
- Teeth that don’t have sufficient bone to support them due to periodontal disease.
- Wisdom teeth that are impacted or causing other serious problems.
- Following a serious accident where it’s not possible to save chipped, cracked or broken teeth using other dental treatments, such as crowns and bridges.
- Milk (baby) teeth that haven’t fallen out.

Surgical vs non-surgical extraction
There are two forms of tooth extraction we carry out at Putney Dental & Implant Centre – surgical and non-surgical. Let’s explain the two procedures in more detail.
Surgical extraction
When your teeth have particularly long or curved roots, are still beneath the gum line or are more difficult to remove than others, our experienced dental team may need to perform a surgical extraction. This involves making a small incision in the gum line to remove the tooth, potentially in more than one piece.
Non-surgical extraction
When the tooth is visible, i.e. it can be seen above the gum line, we will use a non-surgical (simple) extraction because we don’t need to make an incision to get access to the tooth. Your dentist will use tools to loosen the tooth, allowing them to grip the tooth and loosening it further to extract the tooth. With non-surgical extractions, most patients will only need a local anaesthetic and it is a much shorter procedure compared to a surgical extraction.
We always understand your anxiety when it comes to this type of major procedure but tooth extractions are part of the many routine treatments we provide.
